Notes
-----
Album bought at Aba-Shanti-I sound system at 2003 Notting
Hill carnival.
Dedicated to gpf`...Rest In Peace Brother.
As mentioned in the 'WHO'S WHO' page, Aba used to deejay
'Jah Tubby's' sound system and at
that time he was known as 'Jasmine Joe'.
Those of you that were around the sound system scene in the
eighties will remember the slightly
extrovert mic man that 'Jah Tubby's' had;that was Aba.
When Joe embraced the Rastafarian faith he adopted a new and
more positive attitude and with his
rediscovered faith a new name.
That name was and is 'Aba Shanti-I',pronounced ABA
SHANTI-EYE not ONE.
So you see the name 'Aba Shanti-I' is not just the name of
the sound system, it is the name of the
person that is playing the sound.
Over the last 10 years Aba has been playing his sound, and
the music created by his brother
Blood Shanti on that sound,in small and large halls
throughout this country and in the process has
developed a following covering the widest spectrum of Jah's
humanity.
Black/ White/ Asian /Young /The Not So Young /Rastafarians
/Bald head /Dread.All races.
All creeds.All genders.
We don't segregate,we integrate.
They come because an 'Aba Shanti-I ' session is synonymous
with a vibe,a feeling.
No one at an Aba session is made to feel strange. It is not
about what you look like,it's about who
you are and what is in your heart!
People come to discard their worries and to lose themselves
in the music and by doing so cast off
the mental shackles from their mind and the yolk from around
their shoulders,find themselves,be at
peace and be free.
The vibe that Aba generates has brought him to the attention
of the media on a worldwide basis and
he has been the subject of numerous articles in domestic and
foreign magazines.
In the last 3 years we (Aba Shanti-I & Falasha recordings)
have been the subject of 3 television
programmes.
1 German 'Deep in Dub',1 French 'Aba at Carnival' and 1
domestic 'Urban Rites' Big Issue Film
Unit Series.
This has resulted in 'The Aba Shanti-I' sound system and
'The Shanti-ites' live band being invited to
tour Europe on a number of occasions to bring the vibe to a
larger audience.
Everywhere we have played we have been greeted by
enthusiastic patrons who have been so happy
to be 'experiencing the fullness' of 'Aba Shanti-I' and
'The Shanti-Ites' live and direct and in their
own backyard.

BLOOD SHANTI & THE SHANTI-ITES
CAT NO:ABA LP/CD 005
This long awaited new album from Blood Shanti has finally
been released.
It took so long because Blood wanted to re-record some of
the tracks and record some new songs that we all felt would
be a better representation of where Blood Shanti and his
music is at right now. So three songs where pulled and four
new songs were added.
The track 'Holy Mountain' was never going to be on this
album, but due to the unforeseen passing of Sister Rowena
it's inclusion was due to public demand. I will explain:
Blood Shanti did an accappella version of this song at the
funeral of Sister Rowena and it was the first time that it
had been performed in any form in public, as it was still in
the 'work in progress' phase. It was a new song that was
being pencilled in for the next album. It moved so many
people at the funeral including me, with its poigiant
lyrics, that people kept asking me when it was coming out.
Hence only the vocal cut on the album, no dub.
When Blood first played the backing track to me about 3
months before I shuddered. "It's Lover Rock" I said to him
and I must admit to being biassed as far as that style of
music is concerned. I, (hate would be too strong a word)
prefer not to listen to it.
It's not that I think that D.Brown, Freddie Mcgregor, Pat
Kelly, Don Carlos, The Cool Ruler, Bob Marley etc didn't
record some serious lovers tunes, it's the female
strangulated vocals I can't stand. Names like T.T. Ross
spring to mind.
I could never understand why they would try and pitch their
voice an octave or two above their natural pitch so that the
noise that came out sounded like the 'Royal Society For the
Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals' should be called as
someone is swinging a cat by the tail.
My feelings on the genre can be summed up with a little
anicdote: In the mid 70's I drove 120 miles to a dance in
the West Midlands between Mafiatone & Sir Christopher. I
arrived at 23:30 and settled into a corner to listen and
observe. At 23:55 Sir Christopher started to run these
'Lovers Rock' tunes with female vocals (sic),and he just
kept playing them. When it came time for Mafiatone to play,
with me expecting some serious 'Roots & Culture', you
guessed it, he started to play 'Lovers Rock' with female
vocals (sic) as well.
At 00:20 I was in my car driving back to London. That says
it all.
So for me to like a tune with a 'Lovers Rock' vibe it has to
be special and believe me 'Holy Mountain' is special.
It has passed the 'Old Grey Whistle Test'
My cubs are singing the lyrics.Their cubs are singing it.
Samari's cub, Levi is singing it. Momma Shanti, Lioness and
all who have heard it are singing it..."All the children in
the garden"..excerpt from the chorus of 'Holy Mountain'.
